Our Big Move: From the City to the Country

If you’ve been following along over the past few months, you might have noticed a few changes. Not only has my blog and branding changed (from The Blissful Bee to AmyHorany.com — pronounced hooray-knee if you’re wondering), but we’ve also made a big move for our family as well. We gave up city life to move closer to family and to build a future for our own little family. Both of us have lived in Fort Worth our entire adult lives, but I have to say, I finally feel like we’re home. We made the decision to list our Fort Worth home “for sale by owner” last spring. It was a hard decision, and it took some getting used to, but we knew it was the right choice for us. We poured our heart and soul into our Fort Worth renovation, but deep down we knew we needed to live…

Amazon Lately: Tassel Earrings

For those of you who don’t know, Amazon is AMAZING. It’s always full of surprises, and sadly, I’ve developed a bit of an addiction to it. I mean — Who doesn’t love getting a box of goodies delivered to their house on a monthly… weekly… er… daily basis? If I can order it on Amazon, I will. Even my jewelry. Though shopping at overpriced boutiques might be a fun afternoon out with the girls, I have a real hard time paying $80 for a pair of earrings that I know I can find online for $15. Heck. Maybe even $10. Especially if they’re trendy like tassel earrings. I have a feeling this look won’t be in style forever, so I really don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for the designer version. I’d much rather get a few pairs in different colors and pay $15 or less for…

Recipe: Cherry Cobbler

My grandma Vessels was the most amazing cook. I still remember so many cozy childhood memories running up to grandma’s house already smelling fried chicken from the driveway. The table was always set and ready for us to eat some variety of a classic southern spread. And each time we visited, you better bet she had her cherry cobbler waiting for us to finish off the meal. Being the sweet tooth that I am, I typically nibbled on dinner to save the maximum amount of room for cobbler. I think my favorite part about this recipe, even at a young age, was that it wasn’t too tart like so many cherry cobblers and pies are. I even remember rejecting any other cherry desserts simply because no one could measure up to my grandma’s recipe. As a young girl I didn’t know why hers was so special, but as I got…

New Brand, Same Ole Me

Guess who’s been up to a new look? Yup, that’s me! I’ve been up to a lot lately, in fact. A new brand is just one of many exciting things happening over here. I won’t get too far into the details just yet, but what I will say is I’m LOVING the new brand that I’ve created for myself. For a long time, I’ve wanted to streamline the many creative adventures I’ve launched over the years. Not only have I run The Blissful Bee since 2012, but I also run my interior design business, Five 12 Main, on the side ( — when I have time, when is that by the way?? –). And if you can’t tell, I’m also a graphic designer and web developer. I design all of my branding as well as my websites. My husband and I are quite the dynamic duo if I must say so…

10 Tips for a Healthy Marriage

1. ADMIT WHEN YOU’RE WRONG. It’s a sign of strength, not weakness. Yes, I know. It’s hard to swallow that pride of yours sometimes. It’s hard for me, too. But it will show your partner that you’re able to recognize when you’re wrong, so you can both improve as a team. It will also help you look in the mirror and truly try to improve yourself. 2. GO ON DATE NIGHTS. This is one we struggle with, mainly because I’ve pretty much been pregnant for the past 2 years. But once our baby girl gets a little older and we feel comfortable leaving her with a sitter, we’re going to ramp up the date night effort. It’s so important to simply let loose every now and then without the kiddos! We love our kids more than anything, but we (our love story) happened first. It’s so important to keep that…

Client Work: Guest Room Design Board

It’s always so fun to get a client that isn’t afraid of color. A few months ago I had the pleasure of designing a guest room for a client that lives just up the road from me. She lives in an old house, has great style, and let me go crazy with color. Talk about DREAM client. She had only one request, and that was to use a piece of art that she actually created herself. I was all for it, and her art is actually what inspired my entire design. West Elm Console Table Gold Light Fixture Black and White Abstract Art Mosaic Multi-Colored Art Barn Art (Sea Foam Blue and Citrine) Mirror Side Table Pink Lumbar Pillow Citrine Pillows Black and White Pillow “X” Ottomans Shag Rug Lamps She had an existing headboard, which was a light oak color that needed to be updated just a bit. I…

From the Mind of my Baby Girl

To all the stressed out and struggling moms out there, who sometimes feel like they just need a break, here’s an open letter I wrote from another (much smaller) point of view. Dear Mommy, As I lay asleep on your chest ever so dearly, I want you to know how much I love you and how I don’t mean to stress you out. You see, I’m just a little baby and I’m still trying to figure out this big new place. I’ve only been on the outside for just a few months now, and I’m still discovering new and scary things each day. You see Mommy, when I decided to sleep all day today, it was because I didn’t really know any better. When I was in your belly, you rocked me to sleep each day as you walked around your office at work and ran errands in the evenings.…

Harper’s Nursery Reveal

SHOP THE POST: My dearest Harper, how are you already 7 months old? In these past few months, you’ve brought your mama and daddy so much joy and laughter. You didn’t smile at us until you were at least a month and a half, you’ve got a pair of lungs like you wouldn’t believe, and you’re trying to crawl but absolutely hate it. I’m pretty sure you’re going to skip crawling and go straight to walking.  Oh, and pink is by far your color. Especially with those brunette locks of yours. Oh my sweet Harper — you’re just perfect! I started designing Harper’s nursery many, many months ago. I wanted her room to be colorful, bright and cheery. Her room has a ton of natural light, which reflects perfectly off the light grey walls and beige carpet (Quiet Durable in Champagne) from Shaw Floors to be exact. Since I kept the walls and flooring neutral, I was able…

Everything You Need to Know About Microblading

For those of you who have seen “microblading” around the internet, but are still wondering what it is, then today is your lucky day. I’ve been wanting to try it for years and I’m so happy I finally took the plunge. Thanks to the AMAZINGLY talented Carrie Hunt of The Browtique, I now have the eyebrows I’ve always wanted. To give you some background, microblading is a semi-permanent makeup that gives your brows a fuller look. It can either fill in “balding” areas (for me, the outer parts of my brows were thinning), or it can simply fill in your existing brows to make them more bold. The technique creates hair-like strokes throughout your brow instead of one single “block” tattoo. The look is incredibly real and very convincing. Before I got mine done, I had seen it done on others and completely thought it was their real brows. So…

Back Porch Makeover

Living in Texas, you just never know what the weather will look like from day to day. Over the summer, the temperatures rise above 100 degrees, while in the winter we’re known to get snow and ice one week, and 80 degrees the next. With warm and sunny days throughout the year, a beautiful pool view, and a movie projector for nightly TV watching, we knew we would use our back patio year-round. We started with painting our siding a matte black to make the space feel more modern. Next, we added a cedar ceiling that my Dad, Father-n-law and husband actually did themselves. Copper accents  were the original inspiration for the space, so I picked up a few copper side tables, lanterns and sconces to finish off the look. But if you ask me, the first two things you notice when you walk out on our back patio are our new Haiku…
