My Top 10 Design Elements I Used When Designing My Home

I think it’s safe to say that I have a pretty specific design style. In each space I design, I always gravitate toward certain design selections and materials that end up pairing really well together. Those same design elements also come together to accomplish a look that is very much my own. When I describe my style, I have a hard time summarizing it into just two or three words. I start to ramble and my description of my “style” ends up becoming a novel rather than a short title. BUT if I had to paraphrase, I would call my style Modern Boho Beachy. I want more than anything for my home to feel like a HOME. Not like a showroom or staged house. I’m also obsessed with the beach. I grew up going to the beach and the lake, so water is EVERYTHING to me. If I could move…

Getting All Settled Into The New House

It’s been a while since I’ve visited the ole’ blog here, but after months of craziness, I’m finally back and ready to share all my adventures as of late. We recently moved into our new house and have been working hard to get all settled in. Although we built our house from the ground up, we still had a TON of work to do after we moved in. Since builders have their own markup, we wanted to do a lot of upgrades and additions after we moved in. After talking with a number of different contractors, we settled on a few that we were really happy with, and completed most of the work within the first month of moving in. We added things like floating shelves, a wall of custom-built bunk beds, a media screen wall, a shiplap surround for our living room fireplace wall, an extended back patio, and…

A Sweater Dress for the Win

So lately I’ve been finding myself wearing a few of my favorite things on REPEAT. One of them is this super versatile sweater from Target. I wear it usually with a pair of skinny jeans, but it’s even more fun to wear as a dress with over-the-knee boots. Pretty much every day in Texas is different when it comes to weather, so having a sweater that works in multiple ways is a must. Also – how about that adorable clutch? I snagged that blush beauty for just $30 at (non other than) Target. I don’t see the sweater or clutch online anymore, but I have seen them in stores recently. We’ve also been up to a TON of house-related things when it comes to our new build. We’re about 4 weeks away from closing and I’m starting to finalize my designs for the indoor and outdoor spaces. I’ve been trying…

House Update: Countdown to Move-In

It’s been a while since my last house update, and this one is exciting! When building a house, there’s always something going on, but sometimes it’s a lot of “behind the scenes” stuff that isn’t super fun to photograph. But we’re finally at the stage where you guys can start to actually see some of my selections come into fruition. I’ll get into more detail regarding our color selections, tile selections, carpet, wood floors etc., but that will be in another post since there is so much information to share. But as you can see, we chose a very simple color pallet for the entire home. White walls, grey doors as an accent, and we’ll have a beautiful caramel-colored wood floor being installed next week. Most of the fixtures will be replaced once we move in, so any of the chrome fixtures you see in these progress pictures will all…

Family Style: Holiday Pictures

Is it just me, or is anyone else hesitant to do holiday-themed family photos? It’s like, I want to do them SO BAD, but the practical side of me is like… 2 kids… 1 husband… matching(ish) outfits for 4 people… preferably non-screaming children, which means coming up with a good bribe to keep them pleasant… good weather… carving out a time of day where all 4 members of the family are happy and available, PLUS making sure the photographer is available too… Ok. I already need a glass of wine just THINKING about those logistics! I had a holiday backdrop all planned out, but I ultimately decided that practicality was going to win. I don’t know the next time we’ll get a family photo scheduled, so I wanted a setting that wasn’t too holiday(esque) so we could hang these photos in the new house and not have to worry about…

DIY Gingerbread House Village

The holiday season is here and it’s time to craft! Today I’m sharing my own take on creating a gingerbread house. Rather than creating just a single house, I wanted to build an entire village. You can do so by crafting multiple houses, or just one house paired with other Christmas decor. Supplies: Gingerbread house kit Icing  (Wilton brand, found at JoAnn’s) Icing Tips  (Wilton brand, I purchased the starter kit from JoAnn’s) Icing Bags  (Wilton brand, found at Joann’s) Icing Couplers  (Wilton brand, found at JoAnn’s) Holiday Candies Marshmallows (for the “snow”) Multiple Assorted Cake Stands  (I found my galvanized cake stands from JoAnn’s) Mini Holiday Trees  (found at JoAnn’s) Mini Battery Operated Lights Wooden Reindeer (found at JoAnn’s) Directions: First, gather all your supplies to make your gingerbread house (i.e. candies, icing, gingerbread etc.) The setup for your “village” will come later, so you can go ahead and put those decorations to the side for now. I decided to stick…

Hamilton Beach FlexBrew Coffee Maker Holiday Giveaway

Kids, work, a bad back, lack of sleep… you get it. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one that faces LIFE every day. We all have our reasons for caffeine, and the busier life gets, the more reasons I have! Coffee became one of my best friends when I went to college. But coffee and I grew even closer after kiddos. We have like… a bond, you know? All kidding aside, when I was approached by Hamilton Beach to review their FlexBrew coffee maker, I was ecstatic. I had seen it in stores recently and wanted one so bad. My husband and I both work from home, so in the morning we share a pot of coffee, but the afternoons are different. One of us wants coffee, one of us doesn’t. But either way, we end up making an entire pot. It was starting to get annoying. I had…

7 Things I Learned When Building a Home

These past few months have been a blast for Chad and I. We’re building a beautiful home with a builder we couldn’t be happier with in a neighborhood that we LOVE. But, although I’m a designer and have experience in the world of remodeling, I’ve never built a home from the ground up. So – for all of you that might be new to this like me, here are 6 things I’ve learned about the home building process thus far. 1. Nearly all of the design decisions are made in the beginning. Chad and I aren’t building a custom home. We’re building in a master-planned community, so we had a number of different builders and floor plans we were able to choose from. If you didn’t already know, when you go with a builder with a pre-designed floor plan, you are able to add “structural options” as well as design…

A Summer Dress in December

GET THE LOOK: Yellow Dress (similar, similar, similar)  |  Black Leather Jacket  |  Mustard Yellow Faux Fur Bag  |  Wide-Brimmed Panama Hat  |  Mustard Yellow Tassel Earrings  |  Suede Booties Texas weather — I feel like that’s all I need to say sometimes! Some days it’s 70 degrees and sunny, some days it’s 20 and sleeting. You just never know. That’s why I love keeping some of my summer wear readily available, even when it’s winter. Summer maxi dresses are EVERYTHING to me, so getting to wear them all year around is huge. Simply pair it with your favorite bomber jacket, and your set. I found that adorable clutch at Target, and my panama hat is Target as well. What do you guys think? Am I the only one who keeps their summer gear near, even when it’s chilly out? House Update: Framing Our New Build

How in the world am I already writing about the FRAMING of our new build? I feel like it was just yesterday that we finished remodeling our reno back in Fort Worth. But nope! We’ve sold our Fort Worth home, moved to a new city, laid the foundation of our new house, and now we’re actually FRAMING the home as we speak. How does time go by so fast?? Also… I just realized my babies aren’t babies any more. Gah! Look at them! They’re so big!! In less than two weeks, we’ve seen our house go from a lot filled with dirt, to a two-story framed house. So far we’ve been really happy with our team at David Weekley. They’ve been very transparent about the building process from day one, which is I think why we’ve had such a great experience.  I spent MONTHS customizing this home before we even…
